Eight years ago, when Terms of Enlistment started selling a lot of copies, this $45 Casio Duro was the first “extravagant” purchase I made with some of the first windfall royalties.
Fast-forward to 2021, eight years and ten novels later, and I own a lot more watches, but I still wear this one a lot. It’s a reminder that I don’t need to spend a bunch of money to take pleasure in something, and that once upon a time, spending $45 on something I didn’t strictly need was a frivolous luxury.
(It’s also a damn good watch in its own right and easily the best sub-$100 dive watch on the market. It’s tough, unpretentious, accurate, and reliable, all properties worthy of emulation.)

Sir, really enjoying the frontline series and that led me to your site/blog. (BTW, good to hear that #8 is getting closer to publication.) Anyway, I noted that you have a watch collection and have the classic duro. I think all of us with an interest of timepieces, be it automatics or quartz tend to pick up this particular watch. I too have the classic marlin with a nato on it in my watchbox. Funny, I find myself wearing it more so than some of my favorite divers. Good choice on a classic!
Bill Gates favorite watch. I personally prefer classic GShock 5600 but Duro is also a cool choice.
Marko,
Can you fill us in on the rest of your collection? I’m also a watch collector and would like to know.
It’s funny how a lot of our older ‘tools’ can still suffice for our needs, after we have bought more expensive ones. Best to master what tools we have before moing “up”.
When do you see the nexy issue of the Fronntline series coming out: I miss the Russian NCO. Would also like some more writing on the sociological changes in the post treason government.
Looking at your watch and your thoughts on it, am I connecting unrelated dots, or did you display your frugalness in Frontlines, showcasing a world overpopulated and on the brink of not having enough resources to go around? Waste not, want not.
I’ve been following you for 8 years! It seems like yesterday Terms of Enlistment came out. I remember doing the initial cataloging of that book for the Library of Congress. Now I am retired and hope the series ends before I die. Get back to writing! Please!!!
Perhaps now *you* should get a little something from Casio Computer Co., Ltd. 🙂
