When did we reach the point when we considered it acceptable for people to run around and try to tell other adults what size soda they may or may not buy?
Of course, the people supporting this kind of paternalistic nonsense will argue that we’re all footing the bill for the health care costs that come with obesity and diabetes. To me, that’s actually a big reason to oppose a single payer health care system. When the government pays for everyone’s boo-boo strips and insulin shots, then there’s nothing you do with your body that isn’t the government’s business. It’s a universal adapter for the Nanny State.
Man oh man! I WISH the .gov paid for my diabetes. My test strips are a $1.25 each and I’m supposed to use 3 a day. $1368 a year, and they’re the cheapest part of my diabetes. How is the .gov paying for my diabetes again? Oh! it must be the $800 a month that comes out of my pay check for my insurance.
As far as I can see, I’m paying for my diabetes. In more ways than one.
Deeply agreed…
“When did we reach the point when we considered it acceptable for people to run around and try to tell other adults what size soda they may or may not buy?”
Poor phrasing, Marko, if I may say so. “People” have been doing that for decades, in the form of the soda-company sales-and-marketing “experts” who wrote off 8oz bottles for 12oz cans, then 12oz cans for 16oz bottles, then 16oz bottles for 20oz bottles. See also the bastards who make it impossible to buy certain sizes of certain flavors in bulk — just try to find an 8-pack of 20-oz bottles of Coke Zero in the supermarket. Can’t be done.
What you meant, and what you should have written, is “when did it become acceptable for the government to tell other adults what size soda they may or may not buy?”
Oh, and as long as we’re on this subject – anybody who thinks gas prices are a rip-off should never, for the sake of his/her/its heart, look seriously at soda prices. A single 20oz bottle costs as much as a 2-liter bottle did just a couple of years ago? Somebody’s getting filthy rich off those small bottles, and I want to know who.
Wolf, out here a 20 oz is $1.59 to $1.29 (sale) and a 12 oz can is $.89 (these prices are at the Stop-n-Rob). 2 liters run from $.89 (store generic, used to be $.58 two years ago) to $1.50. Brand name 2 liters cost $1.00 until two years ago. Right now, brand name three liters are on sale for $2, and it looks as if that price is supposed to be good through next February. As you say, someone is pushing the two ends of the purchase spectrum.
And a Mexican 8 oz glass bottle of cane sugar Coke ™ is $1.30 at the corner store. Have not looked at the 6 or 8 pack prices.
Brought to you by the “man” who believes firearms are the cause of NYC’s crime problems…
I have to admit I’m absolutely shocked to see that CNN included a negative, not-merely-consequentialist option in the poll. I never would have figured they’d have given the proles the option of thinking “government has a scope” let alone “this is outside of it”.
